Markdown export
Markdown export gives you readable files outside Onnoir. It is useful for review, migration, printing, or long-term readable copies. It is not the full restore mechanism for an encrypted library.
Before you start
Decide whether you need a readable copy or a restorable backup. If you need to restore Onnoir later, create and verify an encrypted .onbk backup. If you need text files you can open in other tools, use Markdown export.
Step-by-step
- Open Settings for a library-wide or notebook-level export when available.
- Use the editor export command for a current-chapter export when you only need one page.
- Choose folder or zip format when the app offers both.
- Pick an output location outside the active Onnoir data folder.
- Wait for export to complete.
- Open the exported folder or zip and inspect the manifest, Markdown files, and copied assets.
What to expect
Markdown export can include notebooks, chapters/pages, copied media assets, canvas metadata, and a manifest that describes what was exported. Internal Onnoir links may remain as Onnoir-style links. YouTube references keep URL metadata; Onnoir does not download YouTube video bytes.
Safety notes
Markdown files are readable. Store them according to their sensitivity. If a media asset cannot be copied, Onnoir reports a Markdown export asset error instead of silently pretending the export is complete.
Troubleshooting
If export fails, check the error for a missing or unreadable asset. Try exporting a smaller scope, such as one notebook or one chapter/page, to isolate the problem. Create a verified .onbk backup before deleting or moving source media.
