Glossary

Use this page when a product word is unfamiliar. The definitions are intentionally practical rather than internal.

Before you start

You do not need to memorize these terms before using Onnoir. Start with the first-session guides, then come back here when a word in the app needs context.

Terms

Vault - The local encrypted storage area that protects your Onnoir library on this device.

Recovery key - The key shown during first launch. It can unlock the library if the system keychain cannot. Onnoir cannot recover it for you.

Notebook - A container for related writing.

Chapter/page - An individual writing surface inside a notebook. The app may use both terms in different places.

Shelf - The home view for notebooks.

Cabinet - The place for images, recordings, films, documents, canvas items, and other media kept across notebooks.

Collection - A way to gather notebooks manually or by rules.

Thread - A grouping concept for related notebooks.

Today - A quick-capture space and daily running thread.

Atlas - A relationship view for notebooks, links, and backlinks.

Backlink - A connection created when one page links to another.

Cardboard - A card-based planning and arrangement space.

Snapshot - A local recovery point managed by Onnoir. Useful for recent local mistakes, but not a replacement for external backups.

.onbk - Onnoir’s encrypted backup package format. This is the restore path for a full local library.

Markdown export - A readable export of notes and related files. Useful outside Onnoir, but not the same as a full encrypted backup.

What to expect

Some views overlap. A notebook can live on the Shelf, appear in Atlas, belong to a Thread, and show up in a Collection without being copied.

Safety notes

The most important distinction is backup vs export. A .onbk backup is for restoring Onnoir. Markdown export is for readable copies outside Onnoir.

Troubleshooting

If a term in the app is not listed here, check the related workflow page first. If it is still unclear, include the exact label and where you saw it when filing a bug report or support request.
